Our Curriculum Choices for 2011-2012

It seems that I am having the same conversation with so many homeschooling friends right now. We all want to know what curriculum each of us are using for the upcoming school year! I really had a lot to figure out this year because I wanted the oldest 3 to all be doing some of the same things this year. This year I have 6th, 5th and 2nd grader to cover!

History

I knew I really didn’t want to be doing two different historical time periods. So, if you are familiar with Sonlight, we ended up skipping Core 5 (now F). It is really driving me crazy that they changed all of their Core names, but they didn’t ask me, and I do understand why they did it. We are doing Sonlight Core G with the older 2 (and hoping that Andrew can listen in to Story of the World with that) and Andrew will be doing Core B.  This way we will all be studying history starting from the beginning and moving our way through.  Thes Core B&C and Core G&H combinations cover world history over a 2 year period.  I am still debating (yes, with myself) if we should do them over a 3 year period to not go so quickly and to be able to add in the Story of the World Activity Guides!  One year with Sonlight and we are to cover Story of the World 1 and 2!  Whew!

Science

We have been using Sonlight Science for the last 4 years so I thought it was time for a change and once again wanted to do something all 3 could do together.  While I was at the Illinois homeschool convention, ICHE, I stopped by the Apologia Science booth and asked them which one they thought we would enjoy (we have already done Botany).  Hands down they said Human Anatomy.  So there you have it.  We will know all the ins and outs of the human body before the end of the school year!

Bible

You guessed it, I wanted to all do something together!  After searching the internet and reading people’s questions and answers on The Old Schoolhouse Facebook Page (amazing resource, go check it out and like it) I found Bible Study Guide for All Ages.  It looks amazing and we got a jump start on one lesson to try it out!  Ages 3 and up can do it together with different age appropriate activity pages.  Time lines and maps and songs are even included!  I think we are really going to learn a lot this year and am very excited for the adventure!

Language Arts

We did Institute for Excellence in Writing last year and can’t speak highly enough about it!  Not one tear was shed last year during writing! not by the kids or myself!  This year we are going to try to do the Sonlight Language Arts and see how it goes.  IF we are having a hard time with it, we will switch back to IEW.  Along with Sonlight’s Language Arts programs come a few different workbook options (vocab and phonic etc) and grammar programs.  We intend to do what is recommended.

Math

All 3 will be doing Horizons.  This year will be levels 6 and 3.  We have really done quite a few math programs over the years but have really settled into this one.  (We have tried Saxon, Singapore, and Math Mammoth)  Occasionally I let the kids only do 1/2 of the review problems because it can just be too much, but it really has help them to retain information!

I am really excited about this year!  On top of all the curriculum I have scheduled already we will be getting to try out and review curriculum  and other products and books pertaining to Homeschooling all year long for TOS Homeschool Crew Review! And you will get all the nitty gritty about what we try out this year.  Our first 2 products to review are in the mail and heading out to our home already!  One is from Apologia -How to Have a H.E.A.R.T.  The other is Civilize This from Griddley Games.  Both reviews will be posted the first week of September.

Have you finished planning for the upcoming school year?  When are you planning on starting?

  1. Yeah, the Core label shift can be confusing and frustrating (especially for those of us so familiar with the old system). Thanks for hanging in there through the transition. As frustrating as it was at times, the change has proven very helpful… which makes it worth the effort.

I look forward to hearing how your experience with Sonlight’s Language Arts goes. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I have a newly turned 8 and 6 yo who are in 2nd and K this year. We are doing Core C (2) with 4-5 readers. We have done SL LA for 2 years, but are venturing out to try the phonics road for both kids. (I feel like C’s reading is far ahead of her writing and spelling). We have done SL science for 3 years but are going to try Apologia Astromony this year (with jr notebooks). We are still using Artistic Pursuits an hope to be able to do more this year as A is getting older. Both kids use Singapore math (we are starting 1A and 2B and challenging word problems 2) Our school year will be kicked off by the birth of a baby sister, so my fingers are crossed that we are able to be efficient and productive:) Thanks for sharing you plans. I love hearing what people are using and how it works out for their family.

  3. Hiya! Fun talking to you today. I took human anatomy in college and have a pretty nice fully illustrated textbook you guys can borrow I’d you like? Love you!
