What is the most important thing you can do with your kids this summer? I have an idea…

Bible Bee logo

Now, more than ever, I sense the urgency to get as much Scripture into our kids and ourselves as possible.  The world is becoming more and more hostile to Christians and it is important as believers to know God’s word.  And more importantly to know it CORRECTLY and to be able to DEFEND it.  Too often I am finding Scripture misquoted or taken out of context.

We have the kids memorizing Scripture and doing devotions during the school year with a program they are in called Truth Trackers.  But they have the summer off from that program.  We also take school pretty lightly during the summer and just focus on Math, lots of reading, and a little writing.  This leaves us a lot more free time.  What better activity could we spend our free time on than Bible Study and Bible Memorization as a family?  I think you would be hard pressed to find anything better! This summer my family has signed up to participate in the Bible Bee.  We are super excited about it!

BB_Slide3

The program officially starts June 1st, however registration has already begun!  I would like to challenge you and your family to get onto the Bible Bee website and see if there are any hosts in your area!  Then I challenge you to sign your family up.  Here’s a really quick overview of what it entails….

BB_Slide2

At the end of the summer there is a competition to help motivate your kids to study well this summer….

BB_Slide4

I strongly urge you to consider what you have your kids do this summer…how are they going to spend their time off from school?  Is it going to be spent watching TV and playing with friends?  What will you be able to tell your friends your family did at the end of the summer?  Will it have an eternal impact?

I know that for my family we will be able to tell you that we participated in the 2013 Bible Bee where we made new friends, strengthened the bonds within our family and most importantly made an eternal impact in our lives by studying God’s Word and memorizing it together.

WORDology:Free Scripture Memory CD Download for kids!

My sister forwarded this info about this really cool Scripture memory CD that is free to download!  We are really enjoying listening to the music. So I wanted to pass the information on to you…What a cool resource to add to your arsenal of Bible Memory techniques and tools!

Here’s a quick blurb about it from the website:

This project started as a hobby five or six years ago when I started writing simple Bible songs, inspired by my morning quiet times. One day, moved by Mark 9:37, we decided to try to recording these songs. Many unexpected twists and turns later, we have our first album. Our prayer is that parents will find these songs helpful for their children to become familiar with some important Bible verses. It was recorded simply, using acoustic instruments and an old laptop with GarageBand. My wife Lisa sings lead, along with Kaela, Lizzy, Zoe, Maria, Kallie, Rosey, Ellie, Audrey, Cora. I sing some backgrounds, along with playing the instruments. The project was mixed excellently by Dan Dybing. Artwork created by Zoe B.

Easter-Resurrection Cookies…again!

Easter-Resurrection Cookies…again!

I am sure that many of you are aware of resurrection cookies. We love these cookies and they have become quite a tradition over the last few years!  What a great hands on way to reinforce what Easter is all about and have a snack the next day to show for it!  Don’t get your kids excited about eating them the day you make them….They have to sit in the oven overnight!

I have looked at quiet a few different sites and no one seems to know where they originated.  Here’s the recipe and devotional to go along while you make the recipe.

Resurrection Cookies

Ingredients:

1 cup whole pecans

1 teaspoon vinegar

3 egg whites

a pinch of salt

1 cup of sugar

a ziplock bag

a wooden spoon

scotch or masking tape

Bible

These can be made the night before Easter or if you can’t do that anytime coming up to Easter would be just fine.  Let’s not beat ourselves up over trying to make this perfect!

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 300F.  (Do this now, don’t forget and try to do it later)

Place pecans in the ziplock bag.  Let your children hit them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces.  Explain that after Jesus was arrested Roman soldiers beat him.  Read John 19:1-3

Allow each child to smell the vinegar.  Put 1 t. into mixing bowl.  Tell your children that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross he was given vinegar to drink.  Ewwww. Read John 19:28-30

Add egg whites to vinegar.  Eggs represent life.  Explain that Jesus gave His life so that we might have life.  Read John 10:10-11

Sprinkle a little salt into each child’s hand.  Have them taste it and then brush it into the bowl.  This salt represents the salty tears shed by Jesus’ followers and the bitterness of our own sin.  Read Luke 23:27

So far the ingredients are really appetizing.  Add 1 cup of sugar.  Explain that this is the sweetest part of the story….Jesus died because He loves us.  He wants us to know and belong to Him.  Read Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16

Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12-15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed.  Explain that the color white represents our purity in God’s eyes once we have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3

Fold in broken nuts.  Drop by teaspoons onto a waxed paper covered cookie sheet.  Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was laid.  Read Matthew 27:57-60

Put the cookie sheet into the oven, close the door and TURN OFF THE OVEN.

Give each chile a piece of tape and seal the oven door.  Tell your children that Jesus’ tomb was sealed.  Read Matthew 27:65-66

GO TO BED!

Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight.  Jesus’ followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed.  Read John 16:20 & 22

On Resurrection Sunday (EASTER) morning (Or a different morning if that works better for you, remember we are not beating ourselves up for not doing it on the perfect day if it isn’t possible-doing it sometime is better than not at all), open the oven and give everyone a cookie.  Notice when you take a bite, that they are hollow!!  On the first Easter Jesus’ followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty.  Read Matthew 28:1-9

I really hope that you will find some time to make these with your kids.  It is such a tangible (and tasty) way to explain the Easter story to them.

Sacha’s<25: The Deep Blue Kids Bible is a new Bible, for kids ages 7-12, using the Common English Bible (CEB) translation which includes many in-text notes, devotions, interesting facts, and memory verses.

The Deep Blue Kids Bible is aimed for children 7-12 years old.  This is exactly who is begging me at my house to let this Bible be “theirs”.  My 11 year old daughter and 8 year old son beg me on a daily basis for this Bible to become theirs after I am done reviewing it.   We received the “Image Flex” cover as our review Bible, but the Bible does come with 5 cover choices.

After the presentation page the Bible immediately introduces your child to Asia, Edgar, and Kat…three characters who will be leading them through their journey in the Bible.  They look like realistic cartoon characters, perfect for 7-12 year olds! We loved all of the color on the pages. It really made it interesting to look at and made it fun to read! I could hardly flip through the pages without seeing additional text or pictures on most pages!

This Bible has many features that aren’t found is the average Bible!  Here’s what the website says it has to offer:

Kids will dive deep into God’s word with the CEB Deep Blue Kids Bible. This engaging, interactive Bible offers four-color icons and illustrations throughout with a wealth of notes, devotionals, Bible trivia, and other interactive elements to capture inquisitive young minds. Plus the CEB Deep Blue Kids Bible will encourage a thirst for God’s timeless message as young readers join three life-like kids in discovering the Bible and what it means to their lives.

There are plenty of in-text notes:

These are one of the things we loved about this Bible.  We have lots of Bibles in our house, but this one is just perfect for explaining things on their level and hitting things that are issues in their lives!  When we took turns reading our Scripture reading for the day the kids all wanted to read out of this Bible and always asked if they could also read us all the “extras” on the pages!  We learned a lot from these!

We really loved almost everything about this Bible.  The CEB version is written on a 7th grade reading level…so it’s not really the Bible that is written for kids 7-12, it is really more of the in-text notes etc that are geared for kids 7-12!  I’m not sure if you have even heard of the CEB version of the Bible….I hadn’t!  Here’s what I found out about this version of the Bible:

The CEB was built by the collaborative effort of 120 Bible translators from 24 denominations and 500 Bible readers from diverse backgrounds and hundreds of different churches.  Using words and phrases that sound natural and conversational, it is a balanced, accurate, and sensitive translation that mirrors how people talk, read and write. Find out more atCommonEnglishBible.com.

This version was a little hard for me to use…I’m sure with time it may grow on me, but when I am so used to hearing certain verses read a certain way it was just a bit strange for me to hear them from this version.  While it is good to get a fresh perspective on verses by looking at different versions, I am not sure that I could use this version as my “go to” Bible.  Here’s an example of what I am talking about…I’m sure you probably know the 23rd Psalm!  Let’s look at a comparison of the that Psalm with the NIV and CEB!

What I liked:

  • All of the color on the pages makes it visually fun for kids!
  • The in-text notes to help kids understand the Bible are just perfect for kids ages 7-12.  Helps them to sort through living for God and what it means to their lives, along with many other fun things like Bible trivia etc.
  • My 2 kids are begging for this Bible to be “theirs”…this makes a parent happy!
  • This is probably the best “study Bible” I have seen for kids in this age bracket!

What I didn’t like:

  • The CEB version is just a bit different for me to read.  I am so used to NIV that it is weird to read the Bible in a different version. (However, I would still highly recommend this Bible!!!!!)

To sum it up: Wow, we really enjoyed reading and using this Bible  the last month in our house.  Not only did my kids all want it as “theirs” but I really enjoyed reading all of the in-text information and devotionals along with them!  I know that we all benefitted from the information we gleaned and the thoughts that were provoked because of this Bible.  This would be an awesome birthday or Christmas present for any 7-12 year olds you know and would have an eternal impact in their lives!

It isn’t very often that I am lacking for words, but on this occasion I am.   This was such a hard review to write because I just don’t get it.  I have spent hours listening to audios and pouring over the Judah Bible Curriculum website and materials only to be more confused than when I started.

I was really exited to be able to review this curriculum.  They state that their goal is for you to be able to teach the Bible without any curriculum.  That sounds great in theory.  However, I wasn’t ready to have to learn a whole new philosophy of educating my children and studying the Bible.  If you aren’t wanting to learn this and put the time into trying to understand it, then this isn’t the curriculum for you.

Without the review crew forum I would have been even more lost than I ended up being.  Being able to read about how some people are trying to implement this was a big help, but still was more than I could comprehend.

Here’s a little background on the curriculum:

From their website:
The Judah Bible Curriculum for Christian schools and homeschools.  It is a Principle Approach curriculum for Bible class designed to help you, the parent or teacher, build into yourself and your students a practical knowledge of God and His word and His ways.

The Judah Bible Curriculum Is:

  • A Principle Approach curriculum for Bible class.
  • Develop a comprehensive knowledge of the Bible.
  • Build strong, Godly character in your children.
  • Study the Bible together.
  • Study the hand of God in the lives of individuals and nations.
  • For homeschool, Christian school, Sunday school.
  • Teach your children living Biblical principles to guide their lives.
  • Apply God’s word personally in every area of life.
  • The Bible is the textbook.

Principle Approach refers to a philosophy of education whose content and methods are designed to build character in teacher and student capable of sustaining liberty.

Our Experience:

It took me almost 4 weeks to really wrap my head (even a little bit) around this curriculum.  Actually, I would consider it to be more a method of teaching the Bible rather than a curriculum (which I would expect to be laid out for you).  This is taught using the Principle Approach to Education.

I listened to some of the audio, read all of the manual, looked at all of the example pages, studied the website, spent hours thinking about it and still had no idea what it all meant and how I was supposed to teach my students using Judah Bible’s ideas.  I have never spent this much time trying to figure out a curriculum, not even when I first started Sonlight.

I wanted to call it quits and not even try to use this with the kids, because it was just so confusing and convoluted.  But, that isn’t my style and I wanted to try to make it work. I am not sure what I am exactly supposed to do with my students, but I can tell you what we did do.

I started out by printing out the lesson 1 instructions and the example pages.  The basic gist is that you are supposed to pray about what God wants to teach you through the lesson and then read the chapters mentioned in the Bible.  In our case Lesson 1 is Genesis 1-2.  I did this without the kids.  I needed to figure out what I was supposed to do, what it all meant, and how would I teach this to ages 3-12!  I spent about an hour and a half reading and filling out the 4 different sheets that Judah Bible provides.  These sheets are supposed to be added to a Bible notebook that you would be keeping. The author doesn’t want this to be busy work for you or your children but something that is of value that you will keep and add to.

The four sheets are all that are needed to make your Bible notebook.  You will make copies of these and fill them out over and over for each individual, event, document (command or major ideas etc), and institution that you run into over your studies.  I had started 9 different sheets just for Genesis 1 and 2.

Judah Bible really wants to break you and your children away from filling out answers and hurrying through Bible study curriculum.  They want you to spend time thinking about what you are studying and how it applies to your life and the lives of those around you.  While in theory this sounds great, it was a lot of work to get me to have an idea of how to do this.

After I read and studied in the morning I just read the chapters to the kids in the evening and spoke to them about some of the things that I had learned.  The next study time spent was looking up some things in the Bible dictionary and some of the cross references from what I had read.  I didn’t have any of them fill out the sheets because I am still trying to figure out how to fill them out myself!

One of the most exciting things that happened after the study that night was the my 5 year old went off by herself and drew pictures of The Adam and Eve story and then narrated what she wanted me to type to add to the top of her pictures.  This was really cool and I was excited to see that she did this.  I might need to mention that it is her favorite story from the Bible right now, so I am not sure that it is totally due to my teaching with this curriculum.

This curriculum also has a big emphasis on government.  This has to do with all types of government starting with self-governing and governments as we know them.

To sum it up:

Bottom line is that I think this is more of a Bible study guide than a curriculum.  Every other curriculum I  have ever dealt with has had many more helpful resources for the teacher to help them know what and how to teach.  In contrast this guide encourages you to take the time to do your own study before you teach it.  This will take time..lots of time.  Bible study is good, but this isn’t like any other curriculum that you have.

100 years from now all that will really matter is our relationship with God and knowing, loving, and abiding in Him.  I don’t want to discourage anyone from studying God’s word, just be prepared to put the time in, as we all should.
